Sparaxis tricolor

Harlequin Flower, Wand Flower

Funnel-shaped flowers open into brightly-colored petals in spring on these South African natives. Sword-shaped leaves and stems reach 6 to 12 inches high. Not cold hardy, so grow under glass in northern climates. Use in borders, rock gardens and containers in mild climates. Good cut flowers. Sparaxis grandiflora has yellow or purple blooms. Dig up and store bulbs before first frost.

More cold-tolerant than other Sparaxis, it is also the most commonly grown. Flowers are multicolored in gaudy pinks, yellows, reds, and purples, and splashed with contrasting colors. Usually have bright yellow throats and dark blotches at the base of each petal. The cultivar, 'Alba', has white flowers.
