Spartina pectina 'Aureomarginata'

Golden-Edged Prairie Cord Grass

These tough, adaptable grasses have a nearly worldwide range, in freshwater swamps and salt marshes from Europe and Africa to America and islands of the South Atlantic. Slender flower stalks turn a rich yellow in autumn, making them a nice addition to fresh and dried arrangements. Their vigorous spreading habit can be invasive -- or can combat the spread of introduced non-native plants. Some coastal communities debate whether to eradicate growths that impede fisheries and recreational boating, or to protect the grass as a natural part of the ecosystem. They like deep, fertile, moist soil, with full sun or light shade. Once established, they need little care but need shearing to control size.

Golden margins add a subtle accent to leaf blades. Handsome by pools and ponds, especially as leaves turn all-yellow in fall. May revert to non-variegated leaves, but stripes usually reappear in time.
