These tough, adaptable grasses have a nearly worldwide range, in freshwater swamps and salt marshes from Europe and Africa to America and islands of the South Atlantic. Slender flower stalks turn a rich yellow in autumn, making them a nice addition to fresh and dried arrangements. Their vigorous spreading habit can be invasive -- or can combat the spread of introduced non-native plants. Some coastal communities debate whether to eradicate growths that impede fisheries and recreational boating, or to protect the grass as a natural part of the ecosystem. They like deep, fertile, moist soil, with full sun or light shade. Once established, they need little care but need shearing to control size. |

Golden margins add a subtle accent to leaf blades. Handsome by pools and ponds, especially as leaves turn all-yellow in fall. May revert to non-variegated leaves, but stripes usually reappear in time.
