Spodiopogon sibericus

Silver Spike Grass, Frost Grass, Graybeard Grass

These vigorous coastal grasses grow throughout the tropics and subtropics, where they cover a large area quickly. In warm humid regions, Spodiopogon secundatum takes the place of traditional lawn turfs, forming a thick carpet of creeping zigzag patterns. Try some in a hanging basket where the densely hairy stalks can tumble over the sides. Those with variegated leaves have added appeal. Plant in moderately fertile, well-drained soil and water generously. Sow seeds in spring or divide established clumps, any time but winter.
Spodiopogon sibericus, Silver Spike Grass, Frost Grass, Graybeard Grass
A grass of many charms, its fuzzy stalks of green leaves resemble bamboo. In mid-summer, clouds of tiny purple flowers shimmer on tall stalks. The fist frost turns foliage purplish-brown.
