Sprekelia formosissima

Only one tender Mexican native species belongs to this group, Sprekelia formossissima. This member of the Amaryllis family can be grown outdoors only in warm climates. Its solitary, 2-lipped flower is bright crimson. It blooms in summer on a leafless 1-foot-tall stalk. Plant bulbs in outdoor pots when fall night temperatures stay above 65º F. Bring indoors before first frost. Return plant outdoors in full sun in summer. Keep soil moist.
