| The most popular of Betonies is gray, fuzzy Lamb's Ears. Low-growing in clumps, it contrasts well with tall, greener plants in edging and borders. Will grow without much water, but rain and frost can damage the leaves. Lesser-known Betonies include Stachys grandiflora with heart-shaped, green leaves and white, pink or purple flowers, and Stachys coccinea with gray 1-inch-long leaves and whorls of orange flowers. Sold in containers throughout the growing season. |
Many whorled 18 to 24-inch-tall flower spikes of rosy purply flowers bloom on sturdy stems in July and August. Particularly tolerant of poor, dry soils.
