Tagetes erecta 'Voyager Yellow'

African Marigold, American Marigold

Native to Mexico and Central America, few flowers are as reliable and more widely -- and easily -- grown than Marigolds. Their non-stop flowers bloom in intense shades and mixtures of orange, yellow, maroon, mahogany red, and creamy white. The pompon-shaped flowers are single, double, or crested. Plants come in dwarf (6 to 8 inches), medium (9 inches to 3 feet), and tall (3 to 4 feet) sizes. The tall varieties are called African Marigolds, and the smaller varieties, French Marigolds. The super-flowering Triploid Marigolds are a cross between the two. The Signet Marigold is not widely grown, but has many small flowers and graceful form. Flowers have a strong, almost unpleasant scent. Two scentless forms -- 'Sweet and Yellow' and 'Odorless Mixed' -- are available. Will perform well in poor soil with good moisture. Cut spent blooms to promote reflowering. Buy in pots or grow easily from seed. Few disease problems. The idea that plants kill or repel some insects has been disproved.
