Tamarix aphylla

Graceful slender branches ending in plumes of tiny pink, rose, or white flowers, give these trees and shrubs a light airy texture. Their scalelike leaves have salt-secreting glands. Used as a dry desert or coastal windbreak, they are considered pests in the Southwestern United States where they hurt native plants by poisoning the soil and reducing available water. Prefer a sunny well-drained site. Will not tolerate heavy clay. Deep-rooted, they will not tolerate shallow soils. Prune annually during dormant season to maintain shape.

Green, jointed branchlets gives this tree the look of an evergreen. Does not flower as well as other types. Competitive roots push out other plants.
