Yellow Bells, Yellow Trumpet Flower, Yellow Elder
| These big, vigorous shrubs make a fine background or screen for warm sunny gardens, with the bonus of fragrant yellow bell-shaped flowers. Clustered at the branch ends, they attract hummingbirds and may bloom in successive flushes from June right through winter. Good trained up an espalier or standing alone as a small tree. Plant in strong light, but protect from direct summer sun. Grow in fertile, well-drained soil. Transplant from containers in spring, 6 to 8 feet apart in frost-free zones. In cooler regions, 4 feet apart after the last frost. Water moderately in summer, sparingly in winter. For best flowering, pinch back branch tips, deadhead and remove any seedpods. Prefer a minimum 50º F. Slight frost may cause damage, but plants often recover quickly. Prune to shape in spring, cutting old or straggly branches back to the main stems. Sow seed in spring, root semi-ripe cuttings, or layer. |
Grow as a tree in mild-winter areas, a shrub in colder, frost-prone zones. Blooms best with heat and heavy feeding. Varieties have narrower or fuzzy leaves and branches.
