| These tropical natives are valued for their dark green, leathery leaves which change color with the seasons. They are grown outdoors in mild climates in well-drained, moist soil. Elsewhere, they are greenhouse plants. Without pruning, these slow-growing evergreen trees and shrubs reach 6 to 30 feet tall. They have single or clustered flowers on reddish-brown branches, and fleshy fruits with large, dark seeds. Use as hedges, near pools or in tubs, and cut the foliage for flower arrangements. Plant with its relation, Camellia, or Azaleas, Nadinas or Ferns. Needs acid soil or fertilizer. Start from cuttings. Transplants easily. Pinch growing tips of young plants to encourage compact growth. Prune to size. |
New foliage is bronzy-red, changing to deep green, or with sun, to bronzy-green or purplish-red. The fragrant, yellow flowers are followed by yellow to red-orange berries, which split to reveal shiny black seeds. A variegata with white-bordered leaves and a pink tinge exists.
