Thujopsis dolabrata

| Several varieties of this superb Japanese conifer grow in the United States. Slow-growing, they range from shrub size to 100 feet, but most will form a narrow conic shape about 50 feet tall. Many handsome features recommend it as an ornamental specimen. Glossy, rich green scaly leaves, highlighted with white undersides, grow on staghorn-like branching twigs. Open cones, resembling tiny woody flowers, and shaggy red-brown bark add appeal. The Japanese use the fragrant wood extensively for heavy construction such as buildings and railroad ties. Thujopsis dolobrata hondae has a denser growth of smaller needles, and larger, round cones. Thujopsis dolabrata nana is a compact dwarf. Handle cold winters and a wide range of soils, but will languish without high humidity and moisture. The ideal setting provides partial shade, shelter, and cool dampness of other nearby trees. Good container plants with similar conditions. Plant 8- to 12-inch-tall seedlings in fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Raise more from cuttings, since seeds often vary from the parent. |
This conical or bushy conifer has a mass of foliage in heavy flat sprays of scalelike leaves. Loeaves are glossy green above, silvery white below. Small, rounded, blue-gray cones.
