| Many of these evergreen trees are rare, though some are native to North America. All have spirally arranged, yewlike leaves. The most commonly grown is the California Nutmeg. It comes from the cool, shaded, mountain canyons of California. A Japanese confier, Torreya nucifera, is the hardiest of the 6 species. It cannot tolerate cold or frost like that in the northeastern United States. |
The horizontal, drooping branches are covered in spiny-tipped leaves that are yellow-green below. The pyramidal crown is more domelike as it ages. The wood is aromatic. Green, plumlike fruit has purple markings.
