| Discovered in 1966 in northern Brazil, their distinctive sculptured forms may have protruding areoles -- each often brandishing one huge central spine -- or narrow-edged, deeply divided ribs accented with crests of fine-tooth-comb spines. Their striking beauty led to much interest at first, but collectors found that their beautiful forms can scar easily. If you have had some success with hardier Cacti, these may offer a greater challenge. Choose a sunny warm spot with porous, acidic mineral soil, ideally enriched with leaf mold. In winter keep temperatures above 50º F. Water before soil is completely dry, and mist on warmer days. |
The round cushion of deep-cut ribs ranges from light gray-green to reddish-brown. Spines grow 2 to 6 inches long. Long, yellow-green to red fruits follow the small blossoms.
