These evergreen, spring flowering trees are grown for their fragrant foliage. Shelter from strong, cold winds when young. Needs plenty of sun and moist but well-drained soil. Propagate by seed in autumn.

Found in canyons, valleys, and chaparral regions, the leaves are aromatic when crushed and used as a spicy seasoning. Small flowers are followed by olive-like fruit which turns purple. Needs regular watering.
