Vitex agnus-castus

Chaste Tree, Hemp Tree

These summer-blooming shrubs and small trees grow best in hot, Mediterranean climates. Plants languish without summer heat. Die back to the ground in Northern winters, but quickly recover. Tiny, bluish or white flowers bloom in dense spikes. Drought-tolerant, they look their best with some summer water. Need well drained soil. Start by seed or cuttings. Prune winter-killed branches in spring before new growth begins.
Vitex agnus-castus, Chaste Tree, Hemp Tree
Palm-like, gray, aromatic leaves and fragrant spikes of lavender-purple flowers make this a popular accent. The variety 'Alba' has white flowers, and 'Rosea' has pink flowers.
