Vriesea hieroglyphica

Grown in Europe since the 19th century, these bromeliads are popular houseplants. There are more than 225 species growing in rain forests from Mexico to South America and in the West Indies and Costa Rica that vary widely in size, shape and flower color. They reach from 6 inches wide to 5 x 5 foot giants. Foliage ranges from green-black to pale chartreuse to red, and some have dazzling markings. Looking a little like tropical birds, their yellow, red, green or purple bracts surround spikes of flowers of yellow, white, or green. Most prefer dappled light, good air circulation, warm temperatures and high humidity.
