Xantorrhoea quadrangulata
| These unusual Aussies are worth seeking out for your desert garden. When young, the round tuft of dense grassy blades appears stemless, but over time it is raised up on a thick, nearly black, woody stem. The bold flower spike grows 9 to 15 feet tall, with a narrow cluster of small, white blossoms. However, wild plants usually bloom only after a brush fire has swept through -- a tough requirement in the established garden. Needs full sun and loose, sandy soil with perfect drainage. Do not water established plants. Good in a large container. |

In time, the woody stem may grow up to 9 feet high, raising the dense crown of grassy 3-foot leaves. Sturdy flower spike reaches over 3 feet tall and 1 inch wide.
