Xantorrhoea quadrangulata
These unusual Aussies are worth seeking out for your desert garden. When young, the round tuft of dense grassy blades appears stemless, but over time it is raised up on a thick, nearly black, woody stem. The bold flower spike grows 9 to 15 feet tall, with a narrow cluster of small, white blossoms. However, wild plants usually bloom only after a brush fire has swept through -- a tough requirement in the established garden. Needs full sun and loose, sandy soil with perfect drainage. Do not water established plants. Good in a large container. |

In time, the woody stem may grow up to 9 feet high, raising the dense crown of grassy 3-foot leaves. Sturdy flower spike reaches over 3 feet tall and 1 inch wide.
