Zamia furfuracea

Cardboard Palm

Seen frequently in Florida and sub-topical gardens, the American Indians used some of the 40 different species to make soap and food. These tropical natives are low palm- or fern-like plants with short or underground trunks and crowns of evergreen leaves. Scaly cones are tucked under branches. Females have larger, thicker cones. Also grown as a houseplant and for Japanese bonsai.
