Cut back on weeds by lining the area around the plants with black sheet plastic. Then cover it with mulch.

An inexpensive and very effective way to prevent grass and weeds from growing in your beds is to uniformly lay down sheets of newspapers in thicknesses of about 1/4" thick, being sure to overlap them. Wet the newspapers with water to hold them down, and cover them with a layer of mulch. This is an excellent alternative to black plastic.

Make sure to take a walk through the yard equipped with a bucket and gloves as often as possible and hand pick weeds. Try to pick them before they flower to prevent them from going to seed and seeding themselves all over the yard. Also, be sure to get all the roots; if you don't, the weed will more than likely be back in a couple of weeks.

To keep your young trees from being overrun from weeds, clear the surrounding area and place weed-preventing mesh down and cover with rocks that have edging to keep them in.

As long as mulch is applied thick enough to keep sunlight from reaching the soil, it will help keep new weeds from sprouting. You can use grass clippings, shredded and chipped branches, beauty bark, hay, leaves or compost.

Get rid of the grass and weeds that grow in the cracks of your sidewalk by spraying them with white vinegar. They should be dead by the next day and you can easily pull them out and throw them away. Be sure to keep the spray away from the areas where you want to keep the plants alive.

You can also try sprinkling salt where you don't want grass growing.

Isn't it kind of tricky to use vinegar and salt because they spread out over time?

Do you mean the vinegar and salt become absorbed by the surrounding area where they are applied? If so, the concentration of both the vinegar and the salt should become diluted enough over time where it does not harm anything except its intended target.
