Match Point met my expectation
« on: January 11, 2006, 07:23:11 pm »
I had to go meet an attorney today, but the attorney's office is close to a movie theater.  I decided to take a couple of hours off after the meeting and went to watch Woody Allen's new movie, Match Point.  I am a big Woody Allen fan, but with all fairness do I have to say that he did make his greatest movies for the last 4, 5 years or so.  But Match Point met my expectation.  I enjoyed watching the movie very much.  If you are a Woody Allen fan, I highly recommend this one.

What was Scarlett Johannson like?  I loved her in Lost in Translation but havn't enjoyed much of her work since then.

I thought that she was really good in it (I also liked In Good Company, Ghost World and The Man Who Wasn't There).  It's kind of strange for me (a straight man) to say this, but Jonathan Rhys-Meyers looked very good in the picture.  This guy knows how to act and move in front of the camera.

Tell us what you think.  There might be use of profanity, but there is no nudity or overly violent picture; this is pretty consistent of Woody Allen.

... I'm contemplating whether I want to go watch Brokeback Mountain, Munich or ...

I'm afraid I didn't enjoy Match Point much.  The script seemed laboured and the acting very poor, especially from Jonathan Rhys-Meyers.  It was simply not believable that someone so charmless could have become so ingrained in the lives of the host family, much less how someone with no obvious talents (not to mention no obvious sign of doing any work) could climb the corporate ladder as he did.  To then turn this person into a killer was a very strange turn of events.  You could argue that the aloof behaviour he showed at the beginning of the film showed glimpses of his future character but this is a flimsy connection to me.

Mathew Goode was excellent, as were many of the supporting cast and seemed far more natural in their environment than the two leads.

Johannson went from being a self confident and sexy siren in the beginning to a needy wreck at the end for no obvious reason.

The film showed none of the wit you come to associate with Woody Allen movies and I found myself asking "why?" several times throughout the film.  Poor story and poor acting make this a movie I won't be recommending.

Tell me one thing.  Do you Woody Allen films in general or no?  If yes, which ones do you like and which ones do you dislike?

I havn't seen all that many of his movies, although I quite liked Annie Hall.  I wasn't overly keen on Everyone Says I Love You, despite it starring Natalie Portman.

I watched pretty much all Woody Allen films.  He made roughly 40 films to date, and I watched over 30 of them.  One thing I notice is that a lot of people like Woody Allen films, but a lot of people don't like his films at all.  There is a pretty sharp contrast between two groups.  It seems that you don't belong to either camp, but I found that the contrast is pretty intriguing.
