Canadian Ginger

A ginger-like scent comes from these 7- to 10-inch perennials when their lush, heart-shaped leaves or spreading roots are cut or bruised. Flowers bloom in spring. Wild Ginger makes an ideal ground cover in woodland gardens in partial shade with rich, moist, cool soils. Start by seed or divide the underground roots. Protect from slugs and snails.

Use the roots of this plant as a ginger substitute. An eastern counterpart of A. caudatum and more heat-tolerant than A. european. Its paired leaves up to 7 inches long may irritate skin. Divide in spring.
