A ginger-like scent comes from these 7- to 10-inch perennials when their lush, heart-shaped leaves or spreading roots are cut or bruised. Flowers bloom in spring. Wild Ginger makes an ideal ground cover in woodland gardens in partial shade with rich, moist, cool soils. Start by seed or divide the underground roots. Protect from slugs and snails.
Grown for its glossy, deep-green, slightly cupped leaves. The inconspicuous, darkly colored, bell-shaped flowers are hidden by foliage.
