These 7 aromatic perennial herbs grow throughout Western Europe into Central Asia, as well as in Northern Africa and North America. Their white, red, orange or purple flowers have hairy throats. Some grow in clumps to 10 inches high. Others are spreading or prostate. Some species develop a woody base. Use in dry, sunny borders, rock gardens and containers.
Bees are drawn to its profusion of small but showy flowers. Its fragrant minty foliage stays compact, so it is good alongside paths or in containers.
