These shrubs are grown for their showy, lilac- or violet-colored fruit, which lasts for 2 to 3 weeks in late fall. Best fruiting occurs when planted in groups. Most die back close to the ground in very cold climates, but often start again in spring to flower and fruit that season. Fruit are borne on new growth, so in warm climates, prune to 6 inches above ground in early spring. Pruning also prevents rank growth. Feed with low-nitrogen fertilizers to avoid fast, leggy growth. |

This fast-growing plant has upright arching branches covered with unique fruit in violet to metallic purple hues. Its green leaves turn yellow to purplish in the fall.
