This deciduous, single- or multi-trunked tree slowly grows into an oval shape. Its foliage gives dappled shade. The shaggy bark is soft and easily damaged. Flowers and fruit are small and inconspicuous. Pest- and disease-resistant. Need lots of water. Mulch to keep soil cool and moist. Protect from hot drying winds.
In spring, purplish leaves unfold. They mature into heart-shaped foliage that is dark green on top and grayish underneath. Fall leaves are yellow or apricot.
