Eschscholzia californica 'Red Chief'

This group of about 10 species of brightly colored poppylike flowers includes California's state flower, the California Poppy. All herbaceous, they produce clear sap and branch from the base. Fully hardy. Requires sun and grows well in poor, very well drained soil. Propagate by seed outdoors in spring or early autumn.
Eschscholzia californica
Bright red petals shade into dark centers. Plant alone for a field of crimson, or mix among familiar orange California Poppies. Subtle purple tinges the lacy blue-green foliage. Vigorous and drought-tolerant, it spreads by self-seeding.
