California Fescue
| One of the most widely planted of all ornamental grasses, they are valued for their low, mounding, finely textured clumps of sometimes vividly green, bluish or gray leaves. They offer many choices in size, texture and foliage color. Plants with silvery, blue-gray foliage, such as 'Elijah Blue' and 'Sea Urchin', make striking points of interest. Prefer full sun in cooler climates. All like well-drained soils, and some tolerate dry soil. Start by seed or division. Shear back after flowering to encourage new growth and to remove old, weathered foliage. Older clumps tend to die or rot out from the center. Every 2 to 3 years, divide and replant mature clumps. |
Native to open forest and chapparal at altitudes below 5400 feet, the flowering stems rise up to 5 feet or more in spring and early summer, and fade to golden-tan. Other varieties have bluish foliage. Most do best with some irrigation and light shade.
