Bearskin Fescue, Festuca gautieri scoparia
| One of the most widely planted of all ornamental grasses, they are valued for their low, mounding, finely textured clumps of sometimes vividly green, bluish or gray leaves. They offer many choices in size, texture and foliage color. Plants with silvery, blue-gray foliage, such as 'Elijah Blue' and 'Sea Urchin', make striking points of interest. Prefer full sun in cooler climates. All like well-drained soils, and some tolerate dry soil. Start by seed or division. Shear back after flowering to encourage new growth and to remove old, weathered foliage. Older clumps tend to die or rot out from the center. Every 2 to 3 years, divide and replant mature clumps. |
This low, spreading, fine-textured grass is excellent for rock gardens and containers, and as a small scale groundcover. Leaves are bright green in contrast to many of the more commonly planted bluish-gray Fescues. Small flower spikes are not showy. An even smaller selection 'Pic Carlit' grows only 2 to 3 inches tall.
