| These tough, fast-growing trees tolerate flooding, seasonal extremes, acid and alkaline soils, highway salts and city pollution. They resist wind damage and tolerate drought once established. Their spreading branches are covered with thorny forked spines. Their long narrow pods have a sweet gummy sap, which inspires the common name, Honey Locust. Lawns or ground covers grow well under their light shading canopy, which is leafless during its long dormant period. Prune to prevent multiple trunks. Stake and train young trees. Roots break paving, so do not plant near sidewalks or curbs. |
The best known variety, its lacy dark green leaves appear late in spring, turn golden yellow and drop early in fall. Mature trees are frost-hardy, but young trees may suffer damage. Very popular because it is thornless and fruitless, which makes it safer and less messy. Also the most resistant to mimosa redworms.
