| These tough, fast-growing trees tolerate flooding, seasonal extremes, acid and alkaline soils, highway salts and city pollution. They resist wind damage and tolerate drought once established. Their spreading branches are covered with thorny forked spines. Their long narrow pods have a sweet gummy sap, which inspires the common name, Honey Locust. Lawns or ground covers grow well under their light shading canopy, which is leafless during its long dormant period. Prune to prevent multiple trunks. Stake and train young trees. Roots break paving, so do not plant near sidewalks or curbs. |
The lacy leaves are golden yellow when young, and mix with the mature bright green leaves through mid-summer. Leaves turn yellow in fall. The twig tips are tinged yellow. This variety is most prone to pests.
