Heracleum Sphondylium ssp 'montanum'

Named for the Greek hero Hercules, these huge, bold-looking plants grow wild and are seldom used in the garden. If planted, they need lots of space and are best for places like parks or along riverbanks. Some may reach 12 feet, with stout stems and coarsely toothed leaves. Cut off faded flower heads to prevent unwanted, hard-to-remove seedlings.

Leaf stalks can be distilled alone or with bilberries to make liquor. Foliage can poison cattle and give humans a skin rash. Pale, brown fruits follow 12 to 24-inch-wide flower clusters.
