Linum perenne
Blue Flax, Perennial Flax, Perennial Blue Flax
Linen is made from one species of Flax, and its seeds provide linseed oil. Whether annual or perennial, all are drought-tolerant, sun-loving, and perfect for the wild garden or in borders. Ornamental Flaxes have yellow, red, white, or blue, simple flowers with 5 satiny petals. Flowers live only 1 day, but the plant blooms steadily from early spring into summer or fall. Cut the flowers, as picking can tear out the whole plant. Will grow from cuttings, but more easily started from seed sown in fall or spring. Perennials are available in containers and live only 3 to 4 years. Sow annuals in place. |

This vigorous perennial flax is the most popular variety. Its sky-blue flowers open on sunny days, but close at night and on overcast days.
