Linum perenne lewisii
Prairie Flax, Blue Flax
Linen is made from one species of Flax, and its seeds provide linseed oil. Whether annual or perennial, all are drought-tolerant, sun-loving, and perfect for the wild garden or in borders. Ornamental Flaxes have yellow, red, white, or blue, simple flowers with 5 satiny petals. Flowers live only 1 day, but the plant blooms steadily from early spring into summer or fall. Cut the flowers, as picking can tear out the whole plant. Will grow from cuttings, but more easily started from seed sown in fall or spring. Perennials are available in containers and live only 3 to 4 years. Sow annuals in place. |

Tougher and more robust than the species, it blooms in sky-blue flowers that close at night or on cloudy days. Buy from native plant and seed specialists.
