Only 1 species of these tender evergreens, Loropetalum chinense, is cultivated. It is a medium-sized shrub grown outdoors in warm regions. Use in beds, hanging baskets, woodland gardens, or as a ground cover. A good companion plant for Azaleas and Rhododendrons. Prefers cool, gritty, moist soils. Protect from hot afternoon sun.

Its compact arching branches have rounded leaves and raspberry-red flowers. New leaves are light green and darken to medium green. Another form of this shrub has white flowers.
