Ocimum basilicum
Sweet Basil, Common Basil
Basil's name comes from the Greek word for royal, and the rich flavor of its leaves is fit for royalty. Highly prized fresh or dried, it is an essential ingredient in such Italian dishes as pesto and tomato sauces. Greek, Portuguese, and Mexican cuisines call for special varieties of Basil. Thai or Licorice Basil is used in many Thai dishes. Leaves are green, purple or variegated, with scented white or purple flowers. Pick larger leaves for stronger flavor. |

The most popular type for cooking, there are many types of Sweet Basil. 'Spicy Globe' grows to only 1 foot tall and wide and has tiny leaves. 'Purple Ruffles' has frilly, dark purple leaves that make it pretty enough to grow as an ornamental.
