Basil

Basil's name comes from the Greek word for royal, and the rich flavor of its leaves is fit for royalty. Highly prized fresh or dried, it is an essential ingredient in such Italian dishes as pesto and tomato sauces. Greek, Portuguese, and Mexican cuisines call for special varieties of Basil. Thai or Licorice Basil is used in many Thai dishes. Leaves are green, purple or variegated, with scented white or purple flowers. Pick larger leaves for stronger flavor.

This purple-leafed basil has a pungent flavor used to flavor oils and vinegars. Excellent for color contrast in salads and garnishes. Produces small, pink flowers.
