Whisker Cactus, Senita, Lophocereus schottii

Growing wild only on flat sandy plains of the American Southwest, they reach heights of 22 feet in the blistering heat. In fact, they need such extreme conditions to produce their pink and white flowers. Thick, hairy beards cover the ends of the spiny stems. Plant in moderately well-drained, humus-enriched soil. Some experts find they do not like lime in the soil. Water freely in warmer months. Keep above 46º F. Very easy to raise from seed, but even in ideal conditions most will not flower until 6 or 7 years old. Cuttings from non-flowering stems can be rooted.

The best-known species, its candelabra shape bears unpleasant-smelling flowers. Round ½-inch fruits ripen to red. The nearly spineless L. s. monstrosus variety's branches bulge with curious lumps and bumps.
