Pachycereus marginatus

Pipe Organ

Growing wild only on flat sandy plains of the American Southwest, they reach heights of 22 feet in the blistering heat. In fact, they need such extreme conditions to produce their pink and white flowers. Thick, hairy beards cover the ends of the spiny stems. Plant in moderately well-drained, humus-enriched soil. Some experts find they do not like lime in the soil. Water freely in warmer months. Keep above 46º F. Very easy to raise from seed, but even in ideal conditions most will not flower until 6 or 7 years old. Cuttings from non-flowering stems can be rooted.
Pachycereus marginatus, Pipe Organ
Named for the clusters of stout, unbranched cylindrical stems which resemble those of a pipe organ. Flowers may be pale green, white or pink, but are usually produced only on large, older plants. Frost tender.
