Tough, vigorously growing ornamental Grass which spreads by underground rhizomes. Cut back hard when leaves look unkempt. Grown for its showy, variegated leaves. Airy flower clusters are insignificant. Many cultivars are available.

This grass grows wild along streams and canals. Cultivated for hay, it grows slowly the first year, but can eventually crowd out other plants. Less invasive in shade, good as a ground cover. Contains the hallucinogenic alkaloid DMT.
