Tough and hardy, Spiraea tolerate sun or light shade and many different soil types as long as drainage is good. It is a large genus of shrubs with showy white, pink, or rosy-red flowers. Prune spring-blooming species during or just after flowering. Prune summer-flowering species from late winter into early spring. Deadhead old flowers to extend blooming.

'Anthony Waterer' is the most popular of the Spiraea bumalda hybrids because of its showy flat-topped clusters of pinkish flowers and reddish purple new leaves. Its mature summer leaves turn russet in the fall.
